Deadpool #5 Review

The Strategic Defense Initiative finally gets approved.

Spoilers ahead!

I believe this was the first truly solo Deadpool story since the relaunch. Well, that's not true because Deadpool has taken down plenty of the presidents on his own but with he almost always had the commentary of Ben Franklin, Agent Prescott or some other character while he was fighting. Even though the dialogue between characters are often a treat, it was neat to see Deadpool go one on one with Reagan without anyone there to give him advice or tell him what to do.

The plot is that Reagan is aboard an abandoned Russian space station from the cold war and is  preparing to nuke America and Deadpool must brave zero gravity and murderous talking monkeys in order to stop him. I'd like to point out that there's this great bit where Reagan brings up handsome Marvel heroes like Captain Marvel to insult adversary and Deadpool points out that Ms. Marvel is the Captain now to annoy him.

By the way, because this is Reagan he's fighting, we some references to his movies, so here's a clip of "Bedtime for Bonzo" just so everyone can get the joke.

The ending was good if not predictable. For all his hard work, Deadpool has finally earned the respect of Agent Prescott. This is short lived as she is killed by George Washington shortly after. The cliffhanger at the end where Washington is planning to burn down D.C. and Michael escapes with the bodies of Prescott and Deadpool is not that suspenseful since Deadpool can't die and we already know Prescott can bring people back from the dead.

8.8 out of 10
